Assignment 4: Thoughts on net neutrality

The pros of net neutrality are that everyone has the same access to the content of the internet. Everyone is able to upload and download things and not have it blocked. The cons are that even if you want things like browser speeds and downloads and things like that to be faster they can not be. People who support net neutrality think that everyone deserves the same speed and access to the content on the web. They are in support of it because if they are on the web should be priced the same and charged the same and delivered the same no matter who you are. People who are opposed to net neutrality believe that some people should get better service or treatment. to one person over another. Also small websites may not be able to afford fees because they have a "lower priority". This could result in a websites termination or they could just end up running really slowly which could case users to stop using the page.

Net neutrality has recently been in the news because a federal appeals court stated, "the FCC doesn't have the right to enforce those rules...but that the Internet isn't considered to be one of those utilities under current law."(CNN) This means that things like telephone and electricity can be overseen by the FCC but they have no power over the internet. Big internet providers are trying to provide better internet access to certain people. Also some websites could be sped up and others slowed down because they are not used as frequently. These issues have been coming up lately because there are things that providers are trying to do.

Net neutrality has been related in terms of freedom of speech as well. This is because the providers see this as a service and see that this is service that they are providing and they shall do so the way they want to. Recipients of their service, or the ones paying for it may see it differently. That they are the ones paying for it and since they are they should be receiving it the same as everyone else.

The recent news about net neutrality would affect me greatly. I use the internet every day of my life pretty much all day. When some website may run smoother or quicker than others because they are used more frequently may be detrimental. If I am writing a paper and need to view a page that is not viewed very often I do not want it to be slower because it is not being used as much as a popular page like Facebook or Amazon. I also use things like Amazon and Netflix and I probably would not want to use them if they either charged more for videos or if they had a slower speed because I would not be in a range of people who were decided to get the "best access."

I am in support of net neutrality. I believe that everyone who pays for a service deserves the same delivery and access to the service provided. I do think that it violated a persons rights if they are not provided the same quality of the internet as another. I do not think that it is right for the provider to choose who gets better access over another person or one website runs better or quicker than another. That should have nothing to do with the provider. They should just be able to provide internet to the customer and that is it. Not in particular any website in particular just the internet connection is provided.

Netflix's CEO is talking about how ISP's should provide the sam access to everyone without an added charge. This is what I think is a major problem with net neutrality is that there may be added costs.

Google has always allowed people to view what they want to view and that people should be allowed to look up what they want on the internet. There was controversy about their terms of service but they are still in support of net neutrality.
